How to choose an after-school activity for your daughter in Bangkok

There are more options in this city than there is information about them. Here is what actually matters when you are comparing, written by parents who ended up running a club themselves.

Most of us start the same way: a few names from other parents, a handful of websites, and no way to compare them. The websites say much the same thing as each other, and none of them tells you what an ordinary Tuesday will actually feel like.

What actually matters

How often it runs, and whether that fits a school week you already know is full. Twice a week is a real commitment and builds something; once a week rarely does. Where it is, and what the journey looks like at that hour in this city — a brilliant session an hour away in traffic is a session she will come to resent.

How many children are in the group, and how many adults are with them. This is the question that changes an hour more than any other, and it is the one least often answered on a website.

Whether she can start without any experience, or whether there is a selection to get through first.

Questions worth asking anyone

Ask what happens if she is the youngest in the group, or the only one who has never played. Ask whether you can come and watch before deciding anything — somewhere that says no to that is telling you something.

Ask what the year looks like, not just the week: when the breaks fall, and what happens to her place during them.

The part nobody puts on a website

Not every child wants a team sport. Some would rather have a skill they can practise alone, at their own pace, without anyone depending on them that afternoon. That is a perfectly good answer, and a trial session is how you find out which kind of child you have.

If she comes home flat, listen to that rather than to the website.

Where we fit

Lions FC Girls is two hours a week in Bang Na, run by the parents of the girls who play. There is no selection, and no experience is needed to start. The only honest way to judge it is to come to a session and watch one.
