What playing under pressure does for a child

Losing, being behind, being watched. Football gives a child those in small doses, on a Monday, where nothing actually depends on them.

Pressure is not something to protect a child from. It is something to let her meet in quantities she can handle, often enough that it stops being frightening.

A match does that better than most things. There is a result, people are watching, and it is happening now - but nothing about her life changes because of it. That combination is rare and it is exactly what makes football useful.

Over a season it teaches four things that are hard to teach any other way. Composure, because a competitive game keeps asking for it. Not panicking when the plan is not working - and a plan stops working in almost every match. Control of her own reaction while the adrenaline is up. And a fair measure of herself, from the wins and the losses together, which is more honest than anything an adult could tell her.

The fifth thing is not a skill, it is the team. Nobody meets any of it alone, and a girl who knows ten other people are in it with her handles far more than the same girl on her own.

That is the whole argument for playing a sport seriously at this age. Not the trophies - the practice at keeping your head when the situation heats up.
